#11 – Torino da fuori.

Studiare, abitare e vivere la città da fuorisede | Studying, living and experiencing the city as an out-of-towner

Tackling social exclusion through smart citizen engagement.

The report is the result of a survey launched between June and September 2021, aimed at obtaining information on the living conditions and housing choices of out-of-town and international students in Turin. The analyses contained in the report are part of the broader work carried out by a research group of the Interateneo Department of Territorial Science, Planning and Policy (DIST) within the Horizon 2020 European research project “SMARTDEST – Cities as mobility hubs. Tackling social exclusion through smart citizen engagement”. The decision to study the specific component of off-site students, thus leaving out on-site or commuting students, is linked to the focus of the project, oriented to investigate the student population as a mobile and temporary population.

The anonymous questionnaire (in the appendix), disseminated through the collaboration of the universities, was completed by a total of 1,538 people, mainly enrolled at the University or Polytechnic. Although the sample represents a very small percentage of the total number of enrolled people from outside the region (the figure is around 40,000), the analyses contained in the report represent the first attempt to investigate the issue in Turin. In a context in which the city is affected every year by the increase in the number of young people who choose to study in Turin, understanding their desires, expectations, paths and any difficulties they encounter could provide further tools for drawing future lines of action in terms of the city’s attractiveness, reception, inclusion, services, and housing offer.

The analysis of the answers to the questionnaire is accompanied by a substantial cartographic contribution, consisting of maps showing the location of the domiciles of the off-site and international university and polytechnic population for the academic years 2017/18 and 2020/21. The sample comprises 11,763 individuals (6,247 UK and 5,516 Polytechnic) for the a.y. 2017/18 and 9,030 individuals (5,276 UK and 3,754 Polytechnic) for the a.y. 2020/21. Both samples are the result of a data extraction carried out on two databases containing the residence and domicile data of all individuals enrolled at the two main universities in the city for the last ten academic years (2010/11 – 2020/21).
