FULL Spring Seminar Series 2021 #1 – Preservation and Decay
This series brings together four leading researchers to speak about today’s most experimental approaches in the field of preservation theory, spanning from critical heritage studies, post-preservation, entropy, and non-traditional approaches to material conservation to counterpreservation.
The first seminar will be based on the text “Counterpreservation as concept”, that will be briefly presented by prof. Sandler and then discussed in an open conversation with all the participants to the seminar. The text attached is the first chapter of Daniela Sandler’s book Counterpreservation: Architectural Decay in Berlin Since 1989.

Bio Daniela Sandler
Daniela Sandler is an associate professor of architectural and urban history in the School of Architecture. She has a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, and a professional degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo.
Her work examines social inequalities in the built environment, spotlighting the ways in which groups and individuals fight for more inclusive cities through the intersection of bottom-up tactics and official policies. Her teaching and research have a global scope, with particular foci on Brazil and Germany. She received the 2019 AIA Minnesota Special Award, recognizing her work as an educator and her support for diversity initiatives and student organizations.
