In 2020,\u00a0<strong>the H-2020 SMARTDEST project<\/strong>\u00a0started to tackle the exclusionary power of tourism and related mobilities in European cities and regions, and to seek planning solutions that mitigate these effects and innovative policy frameworks that produce resilient resident communities.<br\/><br\/>This session will present the\u00a0<strong>intermediate results<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>SMARTDEST project at European regional level\u00a0<\/strong>and in selected\u00a0<strong>case study cities<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>engaging policy stakeholders<\/strong>\u00a0in their discussion. The session will be structured into four interactive presentations and related debates:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The SMARTDEST concerns and research approach<\/strong>: is what we\u2019re doing new, and how?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Results from the pan-EU analysis<\/strong>: the key challenges for social exclusion in different regional types<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Forms of tourism-related social exclusion in case study cities<\/strong>: evidence and voices from the field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The pandemic and recovery scenario<\/strong>. Is this the right moment for a policy turn, and in which direction?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>At the start of the session, will inform the audience about how they can interact<\/strong>\u00a0about key discussion items. A few questions will be asked by each presenter, eliciting opinions of\u00a0<strong>policymakers<\/strong>\u00a0and other\u00a0<strong>stakeholders<\/strong>\u00a0in the audience. Finally, some polls related to the fourth\u00a0<strong>session topic<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the\u00a0<strong>post-pandemic recovery scenario<\/strong>\u00a0and the necessary\u00a0<strong>policy adjustments\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 will be launched, and their\u00a0<strong>results presented and commented\u00a0<\/strong>upon.<br\/><br\/><strong>The ambition of the SMARTDEST project\u00a0<\/strong>is to contribute to the<strong>\u00a0urban policy agendas<\/strong>\u00a0that take tourism mobilities seriously. The research carried out in this project produces insights at\u00a0<strong>pan-EU level<\/strong>\u00a0on the key challenges faced by\u00a0<strong>resident communities\u00a0<\/strong>in the face of the transformative force of tourism and related global mobilities, such as labour\u00a0<strong>conditions<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>housing<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>affordability<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>quality<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of life\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>gender inclusion<\/strong>. For our 8 case study cities, evidence is provided of how different community groups are challenged and how they cope with these pressures. Even in the face of the current<strong>\u00a0pandemic crisis<\/strong>, these insights may inspire innovative planning frameworks and smart solutions that favour social justice and inclusiveness in\u00a0<strong>recovery strategies<\/strong>.<br\/><br\/><br\/><strong>The European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek)<\/strong>\u00a0has grown to become a unique communication and networking platform, bringing together regions and cities from all over Europe, including politicians, administrators, experts and academics. Over the last 19 years, it has done much to promote policy learning and the exchange of good practice.<br\/><strong>The purpose of the EURegionsWeek is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>To discuss\u00a0<\/strong>common challenges for Europe&#8217;s regions and cities and examine possible solutions by bringing together politicians, decision-makers, experts and practitioners of cohesion policy, as well as stakeholders from business, banking, civil society organisations, academia, the EU institutions and the media;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To provide<\/strong>\u00a0a platform for capacity-building, learning and exchange of experience and good practice for those implementing EU cohesion policy and managing its financial instruments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To facilitate<\/strong>\u00a0cooperation and networking between regions and cities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To feed<\/strong>\u00a0into the debate on EU cohesion policy in a wider context, including recent research and views from third countries and international organisations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>The themes for the 2022 edition are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Green transition;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Territorial Cohesion;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital transition;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Youth empowerment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0poliTO H2020 SMARTDEST\u00a0team &#8211; that works in the\u00a0PoliTO research center\u00a0FULL\u00a0&#8211; will be present in the session &#8220;Tourism as a driver of social exclusion: old and new challenges for the urban agenda&#8221; at the\u00a0European Week of Regions and Cities.
