The research project Mezzaluna Alpina (Alpine Crescent) explores the social, economic and territorial transformations of the Cuneo Alpine arc, starting from the complex interactions between urban and mountain areas. By integrating quantitative analyses of existing data and qualitative field surveys, the project aims to understand the daily practices of life, work and mobility, as well as the perceptions and aspirations of the inhabitants of the metro-mountain territory. The report Mezzaluna Alpina – Dinamiche e prospettive dei territori metromontani (Alpine Crescent – Dynamics and prospects of mountain-urban areas) is the result of a structured process of listening to and analysing territorial needs, aimed at supporting the definition of strategic scenarios for the sustainable development and enhancement of the resources of the Alpine Crescent.

The Cuneo area is characterized by a rich orographic structure, defined by the unique relationship between its mountainous system and the plain, where the main urban centers are located. Its crescent-shaped morphology is reflected in a comb-like valley system that stretches along the western and southern edges, where the Alps curve and mark a discontinuity between Piedmont and Liguria. The cities of Saluzzo, Cuneo, and Mondovì, together with the valley floor areas, maintain a strong functional, cultural, and symbolic connection with the surrounding valleys, shaping a distinct metromountain identity.

In this context, the ‘Alpine Crescent’ emerges as a living laboratory for observing emerging practices and envisioning scenarios for a ‘new mountain’. With this aim, the Politecnico di Torino launched a collaboration with the Municipality of Cuneo to analyze ongoing dynamics, outline development perspectives, and identify challenges and opportunities—promoting an integrated vision based on strategic and negotiated processes.

The ‘Alpine Crescent’ research project investigates the social, economic, and territorial transformations of the Cuneo alpine arc, focusing on the complex interactions between urban and mountain areas. Through quantitative data analysis and qualitative fieldwork, the project explores everyday practices of living, working, and mobility, as well as local perceptions and aspirations. The report “Mezzaluna alpina – Dynamics and Prospects of Metromountain Territories” presents the outcomes of this comprehensive listening and analysis process, supporting the development of strategic scenarios for sustainable growth and the enhancement of local resources.

The results, developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Cuneo and specifically with the Department for Metromountain Areas, include mapping residents’ mobility patterns, identifying emerging perceptions of the mountain, and highlighting key figures to deepen strategic issues—contributing to the construction of new visions for the contemporary mountain.

This study provides supporting knowledge and evidence on the state and development of SMSTs in Denmark by using detailed datasets and by conducting an in-depth analysis of the local context . Based on a quantitative data-driven analysis, it describes the main characteristics of SMSTs in Denmark, how they differ from each other and what role various aspects including tourism and services play. Furthermore, it presents a short update of SMST research as well as a recap of recent Danish policies related to SMSTs. Finally, it provides perspectives on Denmark’s SMSTs within a European policy context.

Lands of Monviso. Strategic scenarios for a metro-mountain territory

The territory of Saluzzo and Terre del Monviso is characterized by a socio-economic and institutional dynamism that makes it an interesting laboratory for in-depth study of activities aimed at building integrated development initiatives on the basis of negotiation and strategic processes.

The purpose of the research is to define the cognitive basis for the activation of an inclusive and strategic process to acknowledge the territory’s diverse instances, supporting a socio-economic and spatial development process that takes into account the diversified needs but attempts to strengthen their functional integration, in order to strengthen the organization of settlement, production and access to services.

The contents of the research, at the same time of scientific and intentional value, elaborated within the framework of the competencies of the DIST and DAD departments of the Politecnico di Torino with the support of the FULL interdepartmental center, have the function of analyzing and supporting the voluntary planning of the Saluzzo and Terre del Monviso territory, offering elements for reflection, analytical data and strategic scenarios to administrations, communities, stakeholders and innovation actors.

The introductory part of the research illustrates some elements characterizing the territory, the different landscape values at the intersection with the various environmental settlement contexts, the long history summarised by emblematic representations of the territory and the complex framework of local governance.

The first part, the Atlas, illustrates a considerable amount of socio-demographic data, relating to services and territorial welfare, infrastructures and mobility, tourism and cultural resources, settlement and diffuse residential characteristics, agriculture and fruit-growing, and the local economic and entrepreneurial system. They are the necessary basis for the construction of analyses and policies.

Finally, the second part, Strategies and Actions, outlines possible strategies and actions for a number of priority themes, which refer to five possible images of the territory: the territory of welfare and territorial services, the territory of interconnected mobility, the territory of tourism and culture, the territory of the quality of living, and the territory of productivity and innovation. Many of these strategies and actions stem from a reconnaissance of a series of projects already recognisable and in the field, which has been recomposed into an organic and overall framework, capable of outlining a territorial project for the coming years.
