River Stories. Places, people, plants and waters: between resistance and transformation

European Researchers’ Night 2026

Orto Botanico, Torino
26 September 2026
13:00 - 15:00

Typology:

To mark the 20th edition of the European Researchers’ Night, Interfaces organised a programme of events for all ages over the weekend of 26 and 27 September 2026, which will take place around the Castello del Valentino.

Following on from the 2025 edition, Interfaces is taking part again this year with ‘River Stories: Places, People, Plants and Water – Between Resistance and Transformation’, a workshop designed for young children. The children played at ‘being a river’ and worked together to create a play-diary, exploring how water flows through and transforms landscapes and how it can be, at the same time, a precious resource, a living space and a force to be understood.

Have you ever seen a river? In the Play Area at Turin’s Botanical Gardens, we’ve seen many flowing by: all different, each telling us something about our world and the relationship we have with a place so important for biodiversity. Young and old alike came to visit us and played along with us, imagining themselves as a section of a river, from its source to its mouth. What does it mean to flow through farmland? To be home to a rich ecosystem? And what happens when the waters become polluted and filled with plastic? Many of them tried to tell us, drawing, painting, gluing and building with us the different faces of a river.

Thank you to the European Researchers’ Night for including us in its programme, to the DAD for its support, and to everyone who contributed to this collective narrative.
