Final dissemination event of the PRIN 2022 research project
Next Generation Solar Landscapes. Methods and Tools for the Design of Next-Generation Solar Landscapes: The Renewal of End-of-Life Photovoltaic Fields, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR).

The project, coordinated by Elena Vigliocco (Politecnico di Torino), involved three research units:

Politecnico di Torino (RU1),

Politecnico di Milano (RU2),

Università di Torino (RU3).

The research addressed the regeneration of ground-based photovoltaic fields at the end of their life cycle, not as an energy issue but as an opportunity to rethink urban morphologies and productive landscapes in Italy. The architectural, territorial, landscape, and agronomic dimensions of existing energy infrastructures are the core of the project, exploring strategies for decommissioning, revamping, and reuse within a broader framework of ecological transition and design innovation.

All three research units will participate in the event, promoting involvement for those interested in the topic; and engaging in a discussion of the project’s outcomes, future perspectives, and implications for planning and designing energy landscapes.

The event will also be an occasion to present the book:

Designing Forms for Future Solarscapes. A Vision for the Italian Palimpsest, Elena Vigliocco (edited by), 2025, LetteraVentidue.

The volume shows the scientific, cartographic, and design outcomes of the research, offering both a theoretical and operational reflection on Italian solar landscapes. It includes comparative atlases and a series of design scenarios developed for the reconfiguration of end-of-life photovoltaic fields in three selected case studies.

The book is available in open access at this link.

On the occasion of the presentation of the results of the project “Abitare fluido” (Fluid Living) and the publication “Collaborare e abitare. The right to housing in cities for the new generations” (Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, 2024), Urban Lab will host this meeting with Silvia Cafora of FULL as curator of the publication. This is the second presentation event related to the project, following the one held in Milan on 23 May.

This research imagines a city without barriers that focuses on socialising and a sense of community, exploring the critical issues related to housing insecurity caused by weak and poorly redistributive housing policies, proposing strategies and trends of multi-locality, cohabitation and cooperation for more inclusive, stable and sustainable living for young people in Italian cities.

The extended living imagined by the Abitare Fluido model provides for the possibility of living flexibly in a system composed of several dwellings, with a main dwelling in a peri-urban or non-urban area connected to a shared dwelling located in the context of a hub for temporary living and working in the city. This model responds to the needs of an increasingly complex and diverse society, governed by housing tensions linked to re-urbanisation and the financialisation of the property market, which fuel territorial inequalities.

The data collected from the research conducted in workshops and surveys administered in major Italian cities highlighted the change in young people’s housing needs from a predominance of permanent residents to a growing presence of temporary residents. For many young people, the ideal home is no longer a static entity, but a flexible project that adapts to different stages and needs in life. In Italy, youth mobility has increased, with a majority of young people preferring to rent rather than own a home, partly due to economic and job insecurity. This leads many young people to live in temporary or shared housing solutions, especially in suburban areas where costs are lower but services are less accessible.

The research therefore aims to highlight the need to enhance the potential of young people as natural agents of urban transformation by promoting cooperative and supportive participation in shaping residential life.

Promoted by the Fondazione dell’Ordine degli Architetti PPC della Provincia di Milano and Fondazione Housing Sociale, in collaboration with Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli and AmbienteAcqua APS, the meeting explores youth housing, investigating the ways in which housing can meet the needs of young people and the policies that can influence supply – considering the metropolitan perspective and the ecological challenge – in continuity with the themes that emerged in 2023 in the CARA CASA Festival.

During Milano Arch Week 2024, the meeting will delve into themes, problems and trends on youth housing, starting from the presentation of the results of the research Abitare Fluido, deepened in the publication Collaborare e Abitare. Il diritto alla casa nelle metropoli per le nuove generazioni curated by Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, and investigating which modalities, typologies and forms that living can take to meet the needs of the new generations and which dynamics, policies and practices can influence the supply for youth housing, with respect to the dynamics taking place in the city and the metropolitan area. The event, in continuity with Cara Casa. Il Festival itinerante sull’abitare tra Milano, Venezia, Bologna, Genova, the winning project in 2023 of the public notice “Festival Architettura – II edizione” of the DGCC of the Ministry of Culture, will want to take stock of what has been achieved and project itself into the future. In addition to youth living, the metropolitan perspective and the ecological challenge – themes that emerged in the Festival – will be taken up and discussed again with architects, citizens and partners in order to broaden common reflection in the city.
